Saving Returns: How to Protect the Environment and Save Money with B-Ware

The Returns Problem in Germany
Online shopping is booming – and so are returns. Experts predict a new record for 2025: approximately 550 million returned packages are expected in Germany. This means almost one in four ordered packages (24.2%) makes its way back to the retailer. The situation is particularly dramatic in the fashion sector, where over 80% of all returns occur. German consumers return significantly more ordered fashion items (53%) than other European countries – in the UK, the rate is only 26%.
But what happens to these millions of returned products? The shocking answer: Around 4% of all returns, which is about 20 million items annually, are destroyed in Germany. And the worst part is: only a little more than half of these discarded goods are actually defective. The rest ends up in the trash because reconditioning would simply be too expensive for retailers, or brand manufacturers even explicitly stipulate destruction.
What exactly is B-ware?
B-ware is often misunderstood and unfairly equated with inferior quality. In reality, it refers to sales items that fall outside of normal distribution and are offered at a special price. The crucial insight: B-ware is technically perfectly sound. The differences from new goods lie exclusively in their external appearance. Typical characteristics of B-ware include damaged or opened original packaging, small scratches on the casing, minimal signs of use, or missing non-essential accessories. A laptop, for example, may have tiny dents on the corners but functions 100% like a new device. At reputable retailers, all B-ware items are carefully checked, cleaned, and professionally reconditioned before being put up for sale.
An employee of a B-ware retailer aptly put it: "Since working here, I'm no longer afraid to buy B-ware online." Often, the distinction between A and B-ware is so marginal that even trained experts have to discuss how a product should be classified.
Environmental Protection through Second Chances
Buying B-ware is active environmental protection. Each German produces an average of 19.4 kilograms of electronic waste per year, a significant portion of which consists of discarded computer hardware. The production of a single new PC consumes approximately 3,000 kilowatt-hours of energy – more than the annual electricity consumption of a two-person household. With this amount of energy, a PC with 150 watts of consumption could run for eight hours a day for over six years.
The production of an average 3-seater sofa generates around 98 kilograms of CO₂ – an amount that would require 4,579 trees a whole day to absorb. Those who buy a piece of furniture with minor cosmetic flaws or as B-ware extend its life cycle and prevent new resources from having to be extracted and processed for the same function.
The circular economy thrives on products being used for as long as possible. The longer a product that has already been manufactured remains in use, the more positive its energy balance over its entire lifespan. With every B-ware purchase, consumers make a stand against the throwaway mentality and actively help to conserve valuable raw materials.
Price Advantages without Loss of Quality
The financial incentive is considerable: B-ware offers price reductions of 20% to almost 50% compared to the new price – and that with full technical functionality. Those who can tolerate minor optical imperfections and prioritize functionality can secure real bargains. A B-category laptop, for example, can be up to 25% cheaper than the identical model in the A+ category, although both offer the same performance and come with the same warranty.
Particularly attractive: Warranty rights remain fully intact. In Germany, a limitation of the warranty for B-ware to one year is even explicitly impermissible. Buyers therefore enjoy the same legal protections as with a new purchase. In addition, the 30-day right of return applies to online purchases. You can calmly test your B-ware device at home and easily return or exchange it if you don't like it.
For price-conscious buyers, this means: they save significant money without having to compromise on quality, safety, or service. Especially with high-quality electronics, household appliances, or furniture, the savings quickly add up to several hundred euros.
What to Look For When Buying B-Ware
Not every B-ware provider is equally transparent. Pay attention to detailed condition descriptions: Reputable retailers categorize their goods according to clear quality levels (e.g., as new, second chance, B-ware) and describe exactly what cosmetic defects may occur. Check whether technical defects are explicitly stated – for example, a non-functioning USB port should be clearly noted in the product condition.
Make sure the retailer carries out a quality inspection. Professional providers test every device for full functionality before sale, clean it thoroughly, and professionally refurbish it. Ask about the warranty conditions: Many B-ware shops offer their own retailer warranty in addition to the statutory warranty.
Read customer reviews and find out about the return policy. Free or inexpensive return shipping within the statutory withdrawal period gives you security. Also, compare different quality categories from the same provider – sometimes the price difference between as-new B-ware and heavily used goods is significant, while the optical difference is minimal.
Conclusion: Smart Shopping, Protecting the Environment
B-ware is much more than a bargain – it is a conscious decision for sustainability and against waste. With 550 million returned packages annually in Germany alone and 20 million destroyed items, online retail faces massive ecological challenges. Consumers have the power to counteract this through their purchasing behavior.
Those who choose B-ware not only save an average of 20 to 50% of the new price but also give functional products a second chance. The saved resources and avoided CO₂ emissions add up considerably: the energy for a single new PC alone could power the same computer for six years. With millions of devices, this effect is enormously multiplied.
The technical quality of tested B-ware is in no way inferior to new goods – only minor cosmetic details differentiate them. With a full warranty, 30-day right of return, and professional refurbishment, B-ware offers all the advantages of a new purchase at a fraction of the price. In times of rising living costs and growing environmental awareness, B-ware is the logical choice for anyone who wants to shop smartly, sustainably, and affordably.
